Protect Social Security

In February, President Obama created the National Commission on Fiscal and Financial Reform to put America "on the path towards fiscal reform and financial responsibility." However, AAUW\u2019s worried that members of the Commission view cuts to Social Security as a potential way to cut the deficit. Send a message to members of the Commission today and let them know that cutting Social Security benefits is unacceptable.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund announced today that it is awarding $11,500 to the Women's Law Project to support the lawsuit Foltz et al. v. Delaware State University. The lawsuit was filed by 15 members of the Delaware State University (DSU) women's equestrian team to challenge the university's decision to eliminate the team and replace it with competitive cheerleading.

Last week, Vice President Joe Biden, along with the White House Middle Class Task Force and the White House Council on Women and Girls, announced recommendations to improve equal pay enforcement and improve work-family balance for all Americans. Among the five recommendations: pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.

And yet 47 years later, woman still get paid only 77 cents on average for every dollar a man makes; women of color still face an even wider pay gap; and we're still fighting for pay equity. In honor of the Equal Pay Act anniversary, urge your senators to move the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Last week, President Obama announced that his nominee to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court is Solicitor General Elena Kagan. Kagan has already begun meeting with senators on Capitol Hill and confirmation hearings are expected in late June or early July. AAUW will be submitting questions we'd like the senators to ask Solicitor General Kagan during these hearings, and we want you to be a part of that process. Submit your suggested questions now.
